A fundamental part of social selling is making sure you have adequate connections with your business contacts, prospects, and customers on the social web.

No connections, no socializing. No socializing, very little social selling.

With this context in mind, have you ever wondered when adding someone to LinkedIn, if you should write a personalized message or use the default LinkedIn message? And if you write a personalized message, have you ever wondered what type of message may yield the highest rate?

Last month, I attended Social Media Marketing World 2015 in San Diego, hosted by Socialmediaexaminer.com. Aside from wanting to meet great people and learn about what’s trending in social media, one of my goals was to determine:

What type of LinkedIn message maximizes the connection rate between myself and those I meet at the event.

This article details the findings in hopes that it may assist you with increasing your LinkedIn and social selling success.

The specs:

1. For the experiment, I used 90 business cards I received from the event,
2. Contacts were added within 1 business day from the completion of the event (Saturday, March 28 and Sunday, March 29)
3. Data was aggregated on April 7 (7 business days from the completion of the event).
4. I put the 90 business cards into three groups of 30.
5. Here were the messages:

  • Message A: ‘Hey [FIRST NAME], nice meeting you at Social Media Marketing World. Cheers.’
  • Message B: ‘Hey [FIRST NAME], nice meeting you at Social Media Marketing World. Want to stay connected on LinkedIn?’
  • Message C: ‘I’d like to add you to my professional network on LinkedIn. – Andrew Schiestel’ (Note: this is the default LinkedIn message)

Here were the findings:

The winner is appears to be Group B: ‘Hey [FIRST NAME], nice meeting you at Social Media Marketing World. Want to stay connected on LinkedIn?’

Conclusion

The data isn’t a massive sample size (I worked from one event with 90 contacts) but despite this, it still may point to a more personalized message being more effective than using the default message LinkedIn provides.

Do you have any thoughts to add? What methods or messages have you found work really well to connect better with people on social media?
